That letter is part of the serial number and the number should always be recorded with the suffix, i.e., 1234a.

This is one of the best 1917-dated 1916 model DWM Navy Lugers we have seen. It has approx. 97 blue overall with light edge wear. The straw parts have approx. 95 finish. The 6quot; 9mm Luger caliber barrel has an excellent bore. The numbers are matching on the frame and barrel, grips, safety, trigger, side plate, toggles, sear, and magazine. SERIAL NUMBER RANGES. LUGER PISTOL M1900 AMERICAN EAGLE SECOND ISSUE 7.65MM U.S. ARMY TRIALS. The listed serial number represents 770 pistols purchased by Bannerman amp; Sons from the United States Government Arsenal at Springfield Armory in 1906. Second it has a different number on the rear of the main lower frame 1843 vs. 2701 on the rest of the pistol. All numbers match.
